1. My Feltie Feels Soft and Squishy

This is by far the most common beginner mistake.

Many people think they're finished because their project looks roughly the right shape. In reality, the inside is still too soft.

How to Fix It

Simply keep felting.

Every poke with your needle binds the wool fibres together, making the wool denser and firmer.

Your project should feel:

• Firm all over
• Hold its shape when squeezed
• Have very little give

A good comparison is a dense kitchen sponge, dinner roll, or firm stress ball.

If you're unsure whether it's firm enough...

It probably isn't yet.

It's almost impossible to over-felt your project.

2. My Project Looks Lumpy

Lumps usually happen when the wool isn't wrapped evenly or enough shaping hasn't been done early on.

Luckily, they're easy to fix.

How to Fix It

Spend some extra time felting directly over the raised area.

As the fibres tighten, the bump will gradually flatten.

If one area is lower than the rest, don't try to flatten the entire project.

Instead:

• Pull a small amount of matching wool.
• Lay it over the low spot.
• Felt it into place.
• Blend the edges into the surrounding wool.

Adding wool is completely normal—even experienced needle felters do it throughout a project.

3. My Surface Is Really Fuzzy

A fuzzy surface usually means one of two things:

• The wool hasn't been felted enough.
• Loose fibres haven't been secured.

How to Fix It

Continue felting over the entire surface using even pokes.

You'll notice the loose fibres slowly disappear as they become locked into the wool beneath.

If a few stubborn fibres remain, use the tip of your needle to gently guide them into place before felting them down.

The smoother your project becomes, the more polished it will look.

4. My Edges Aren't Clean

Straight lines and crisp edges can feel intimidating when you're first starting.

The secret isn't perfect placement—it's patience.

How to Fix It

Rather than trying to force the wool into place with your fingers, let your needle do the work.

Use the tip of your needle to gently guide the fibres inward while felting.

Small adjustments create much cleaner lines than trying to move large amounts of wool at once.

Take your time around:

• Faces
• Small details

These areas benefit from slower, more precise felting.

5. I Added Too Much Wool

It happens!

How to Fix It

Continue felting the extra wool.

As wool compresses, it becomes smaller.

You'd be surprised how much a piece of wool shrinks as you keep felting.

If the piece is still too large after plenty of felting, you can carefully trim away a small amount and continue shaping the remainder.

6. I Didn't Add Enough Wool

This is actually even easier to fix.

How to Fix It

Simply pull a small piece of matching wool.

Lay it over the thin area.

Felt it into place.

Blend the edges into the surrounding fibres until everything looks even.

Needle felting is built around adding layers.

Very few projects are completed using only the original wool.

7. My Shape Looks Uneven

Sometimes you don't notice your project becoming uneven until you're almost finished.

Don't panic.

How to Fix It

Stop every few minutes and look at your Feltie from every angle.

Rotate it.

Flip it over.

Look at it from above.

Viewing your project from different angles makes uneven areas much easier to spot.

Then simply:

• Felt down the higher areas.
• Add wool to the lower areas if needed.
• Continue shaping until everything feels balanced.

8. My Needle Keeps Breaking

Broken needles are frustrating, but they usually happen for one simple reason.

The needle is being bent while it's inside the wool.

Needle felting needles are incredibly strong when moving straight up and down—but they're surprisingly fragile from side to side.

How to Fix It

Always guide your needle:

• Straight in
• Straight out

Avoid twisting, levering, or bending the needle while it's inside your project.

Taking a second to keep your needle straight can dramatically reduce breakages.

9. My Small Details Won't Stay Put

Tiny details like smiles, hearts, trim, and windows can sometimes shift while you're felting.

How to Fix It

Don't felt the entire piece immediately.

Instead:

• Position it.
• Lightly secure one end.
• Check the placement.
• Secure the opposite end.
• Then felt the rest into place.

This gives you time to make adjustments before everything becomes permanent.

10. My Colours Look Messy

Sometimes colours blend together more than expected.

How to Fix It

Use thinner layers of wool.

It's much easier to add another thin layer than remove a thick one.

When adding new colours:

• Keep the edges neat.
• Felt them in gradually.
• Blend only where you want colours to meet.

Working with thinner layers gives you much more control.

11. I Accidentally Poked Through to the Other Side

This happens most often when attaching small pieces like wheels, ears, or embellishments.

How to Fix It

Use shorter, controlled pokes.

Think about attaching the top layer rather than stabbing through the entire project.

If you're working on something small, support it with your fingers so you can better feel how deep your needle is going.

12. My Feltie Doesn't Look Like the Picture

This might be the biggest "mistake" beginners worry about—but it's actually not a mistake at all.
