5 Signs Your Feltie is “Done”
(And When to Keep Poking)
Share
If you’re new to needle felting, it can be tricky to know when your Feltie is actually done. Should you keep poking? Is it firm enough? What if it still looks a little fuzzy?
Don’t worry, every needle felter asks these questions. While there’s no hard rule, there are a few helpful signs that your project is ready for the spotlight.
1. It Feels Firm to the Touch
A finished Feltie should feel solid and springy, not squishy. Give it a gentle squeeze. If it still feels soft in the middle, keep felting! The more you poke, the more the wool fibers compress and lock together, creating a durable shape that holds.
2. The Surface Looks Smooth and Even
As you felt, the outer layer of wool becomes more compact and polished. You’ll know you’re close to done when the surface looks smooth, with no loose wisps or uneven patches. If you still see fluff or flyaways, spend a bit more time refining the surface.
3. Details Hold Their Shape
Once you’ve added features like ears, arms, or a face, check that they stay put and don’t shift or sag. A well-felted base helps everything stay secure, and lets your Feltie show off its full personality!
4. It Bounces Back Slightly When Pressed
Your Feltie shouldn’t feel rock hard, but it should bounce back gently when you press it. Think of a stress ball, that’s the kind of firmness you’re aiming for.
5. You Feel Happy with How It Looks
Here’s the truth: no two Felties will ever look exactly alike, and that’s what makes them special. If yours looks a little different from the tutorial, that’s okay! Once it feels sturdy, holds its shape, and makes you smile, it’s done.
Bonus Tip: Trust Your Gut
The more you felt, the better you’ll get at recognizing that sweet spot between “almost there” and “I’m done!” If you’re not quite sure, take a break and come back with fresh eyes, you’ll usually know right away.
Remember: You can always keep poking, shaping, and adding little touches. But at some point, the magic lies in calling it finished and celebrating what you’ve created.
